Black History: Saul Williams

American poet.Emcee.Musician.Actor.
Saul Williams have carved a unique identity for himself, his fans and you and I. His works break walls and leap boundaries while holding truths and the roots of Black culture in hand. My favorite of Saul's offerings is the album The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust(2007). So provocative it practically spits in your face and the production that really delivers a punch to the head in
(yes this is me complimenting).

Now Reading

How Sassy Changed My Life. Kara Jeselia & Marisa Meltzer

It did.
I really have to thank my mom for reading the headlines
of this magazine and picking the publication up thinking
" ...Now this will be a little more thoughtful for my daughter to read."
I was ever grateful when she returned from the grocery with an issue pour moi
when I was a pre teen.
Reading the history of how this teen- zine came to be
is quite inspiring to me (at the moment).
I do not think the young girls of now have voice like this in mainstream media speaking with them (sad).

Gwendolyn Brooks

SADIE AND MAUD

Maud went to college.
Sadie stayed at home.
Sadie scraped life
With a fine-tooth comb.

She didn’t leave a tangle in.
Her comb found every strand.
Sadie was one of the livingest chits
In all the land.

Sadie bore two babies
Under her maiden name.
Maud and Ma and Papa
Nearly died of shame.

When Sadie said her last so-long
Her girls struck out from home.
(Sadie had left as heritage
Her fine-tooth comb.)

Maud, who went to college,
Is a thin brown mouse.
She is living all alone
In this old house.

Kisses

I'm in love with the band Kisses.
I adore them like I would a new boyfriend....
Actually their record The Heart of the Nightlife is my new boyfriend.

Black History: Shingai Shoniwa

Shingai Shoniwa! My favorite Black woman of our time (kicks most females in the music biz far far down the road). Lead singer and bass player of the band The Noisettes, this phenomenal performer and writer has also put more than one letter in the word GORGEOUS (obviously).
